Script:
Good morning. It鈥檚 66 years to the day when the scientists Crick and Watson walked into a pub in Oxford and reportedly announced 鈥淲e鈥檝e discovered the secret of life!鈥 I imagine that would have stopped quite a few conversations in their tracks before it then started off a whole series of excited new ones.聽
The 鈥榮ecret鈥 they鈥檇 discovered was the structure of DNA, the double helix that even a non-scientist such as myself would recognise in a moment. And just as 鈥楧NA鈥 found its way out of the lab and into the pub that day, so it鈥檚 now slipped easily into everyday discourse. 鈥業t鈥檚 in the DNA鈥 has become shorthand for our essential characteristics - it鈥檚 what we鈥檙e made of.聽
And yet when people talk of 鈥榝inding out what someone鈥檚 made of, they鈥檙e referring to qualities which are often discovered only in the face of adversity. It鈥檚 when we鈥檙e up against it聽 (whatever that 鈥榠t鈥 may be) that we discover whether we have real depths of steadfastness or courage on which to draw. For many people of faith, there鈥檚 a sense that these qualities are expressions of something that God has 鈥榖uilt in鈥 to human beings. The biblical Book of Genesis speaks of God breathing 鈥榯he breath of life鈥 into his human creation- what we鈥檙e made of connects us with the life of heaven.
There鈥檚 a lovely hymn which gives voice to this understanding: 鈥楤reathe on me, Breath of God, fulfil my heart鈥檚 desire, until this earthly part of me glows with your heav鈥檔ly fire鈥.All sorts of things form us - and one of the secrets of life is finding a way聽 to draw on the resources that lie deep within, enabling us to become more than we鈥檇 hoped, and to make our world better than we鈥檇 feared.聽
All-powerful and all-loving God, breathe new life into us that we may discover within ourselves all that connects us to one another and to you.聽 Amen.
