The Periodic Table

Adam Walton and guests mark the International Year of the Period Table by discussing the table's vital role in our understanding of the elements which make up our universe.

The Periodic Table of the Elements was first devised 150 years ago this year by a brilliant Russian chemist called Dmitiri Mendeleev. To celebrate that anniversary, 2019 has been proclaimed the International Year of the Periodic Table. In this week's Science Cafe Adam Walton and guests discuss Mendeleev's brainchild and its vital role in our understanding of the elements which make up our Universe.

Happy 150th Birthday!

The Periodic Table is a vital tool both to school students and to research chemists and this year it's 150 years old. You probably remember it from school, pinned up on the wall of the chemistry laboratory:Ìýa big chart made up of rows and columns of boxes. Each box represented a chemical element, with a big letter in the middle and numbers in the corners.ÌýÌýÌý

To mark the anniversary, 2019 has been designated the International Year of the Periodic Table. And in this week's Science Café AdamÌýfinds outÌýhow an idea which was devised 150 years ago by a brilliant Russian chemist is still essential to scientific research. He explores the way thatÌýthis elegant chart has reflected and refined our understanding of chemistry over the years andÌýunearths some ofÌýthe stories of the elements it contains.

Adam's guests are Dr. David Willock, Reader in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry at Cardiff University; Dr. Rebecca Melen, Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry, also at Cardiff University; and science writer Sam Kean, author of the book The Disappearing Spoon – and other True Tales from the Periodic Table.Ìý
