Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

Given that my day job involves cassocks, cloaks and clerical wear, it’s probably no surprise that I have a thing for fancy dress. So a couple of weeks ago I was chuffed to bits to get an invite to my pal and fellow priest’s Reverend Anna’s 40th birthday party. Not just wish her ‘congratulations’ and jubilations but because the theme was 90s icons and costumes were strongly encouraged. I contemplated a ginger wig, glasses and forgetting my toothbrush but went for conical bra and a head mic and settled on ‘living doll’ Madonna.

Ìý

Mr Bottley, however was a little less enthusiastic when it came to deciding what to wear declaring, ‘I don’t care what I go as, but you sort it out.’ He may be that he regretted his words because I couldn’t resist being a bit of a ‘devil woman’, and that’s how last Friday night, at a church hall in Nottinghamshire, our Graham found himself, under the dazzlingly disco lights, dressed head to toe as the indisputable king of the 90’s, Mr Blobby.

Ìý

Graham’s not known for being an extrovert and has a nervous disposition, so honestly, I didn’t know how this would go, but I’m pleased to report he embraced it wholeheartedly. I asked him ‘Do you want to dance?’ he ‘Suddenly’ bounded onto the floor, and showing ‘the young ones’ how it’s done, began to ‘move it’, I really thought I was ‘dreaming’.

Ìý

Mr Blobby bounced around for most of the eveningÌý - Reborn (track 2 of Cliff’s new album) full of the sheer ‘joy of living’ the very embodiment of Jesus’ gospel promise of ‘life in all it’s fullness’, it made me proud and little bit tearful. And his exuberance reminded me that while we can’t always have much control over the circumstances of our own dance of life or indeed how long we get to stay on the floor, we can choose how we face the music and if we’re lucky, who we choose to face it alongside. And last Friday night as Mr Blobby showed the whole room how it was done, I knew there and then that there really was no place I’d rather be.ÌýÌý I did, however have to Carrie him home…
