Pause For Thought
Matt Woodcock, Church of England Pioneer Minister and Mission Supporter in the Diocese of York:
Ìý
A few nights ago I had a lively reunion with former colleagues from my days as a local press reporter. Over ale and pizza, we remembered that the profession exposed us to the world at its most extreme. At its best, worst - and certainly at its weirdest.Ìý There were times when you really couldn’t make it up. Like my story about the man refused a bottle of his favourite sherry at the supermarket checkout, until he could prove his age. He was 87.
Ìý
And Ratty the Yorkshire Terrier who would escape the family farm to catch the Number Ten bus to the pub - and back again.Ìý But we wrote an awful lot of bad news too.
The newsroom was a stark, daily reminder of how glorious and horrible the world can be sometimes. Having now moved from notebook to prayer book, I see how those days prepared me for ministerial life. The cycle of consolation and celebration.Ìý Take a few Sundays ago. The wonder of christening adorable baby Lucy one moment. Sad prayers of condolence for a grieving son the next.
Ìý
I’m often asked to try to make spiritual sense of life’s ebb and flow. Explain the reasons for its sufferings amongst its pleasures.Ìý I find it hard.Ìý For me, the Christian journey is a lifetime spent trying to work God out. A narrow path peppered with stages of doubt and trust.
But what I’ve consistently found in the midst of my own family’s triumphs, trials and tragedies, has been the difference people make. Family, friends, strangers. Through them I’ve experienced God’s love most acutely. Their laughter, tears, comfort and prayer.
I think Tuesday’s breakfast show highlighted this unforgettably. I was profoundly moved to hear the story of Cat and Michael, who tragically lost their triplets when they were just hours old.
Ìý
They said it was the love, care and compassion of their midwife that made all the difference.
That enabled them to not just carry on - but now to be helping others who have suffered a similar loss.Ìý ‘We found that inner strength because of Nikki,’ Cat said.Ìý In our broken and beautiful world, this story inspires me that when those around us are weakest, we have what I think is a sacred capacity, to make them strong.
