Military sonar activity "probable cause" of whale deaths.

A senior whale expert says the death of five whales off Donegal and Mayo was probably caused by military sonar activity.

And Fintan O'Toole on what he terms 'pre-fascism'.

A senior whale expert has said the most likely cause of the death of five beaked whales off Donegal and Mayo was military sonar activity. Dr Simon Berrow, who has 28 years experience working with the mammals, is the chief science officer with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group. He says it's "highly unusual" for beaked whales to be stranded in this way - but they're vulnerable to acoustic trauma such as sonar, which could be caused by submarines or by seismic surveys. The Royal Navy says "There is no evidence that the deaths of these marine mammals have been attributed to any Royal Navy Sonar operations, trials or exercises.

The Orwell prize winning journalist and writer Fintan O'Toole on what he terms 'pre-fascism' - scenarios where state cruelty to minorities becomes "OK", the free is press curtailed, and so called 'strongman' nationalist leaders come to the fore.
