Mary Anne Hobbs reveals the shortlist for the 2018 Hyundai Mercury Prize and chats to some of the artists up for the most prestigious album prize in British music.

The Mercury Prize launched in 1992, with Primal Scream scooping the inaugural prize. Last year's winner was the south London singer-songwriter Sampha, who was championed very early on by 6 Music and Lauren Laverne.
