Only Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina have competed at more World Cup finals than Mexico. However, while those countries have won multiple World Cups, progress by the Mexicans has been repeatedly halted at the last 16. They have not won a knockout game at the tournament since beating Bulgaria on home soil in 1986. Conversely, they have impressive pedigree in getting out of their group - the last time they went out in the opening stage was in 1978. Sweden qualified for a World Cup for the first time since 2006 courtesy of a famous play-off win over Italy, which denied the Azzurri a finals appearance for the first time since 1958.
