Pause For Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
When I left home at 17 to begin training for the priesthood, I didn鈥檛 realise what a tough journey it would be. Material possessions were taken from us, watches, pens, even our clothes. We were sent to bed after 9pm every night and got up again to pray at 2 a.m. We barely got enough to eat, weren鈥檛 allowed to read a newspaper or listen to radio and Television wasn鈥檛 heard of.
The world outside the monastery was judged to be an evil place. I was even given a new name to signify the new person they were asking me to become.
It was bad psychology and worse theology because it was telling God he made a mess of creation.
Yet they believed they were right and the rest of the world was wrong. First lesson: Beware of those who never question their beliefs.
Such a false spirituality would have destroyed me if I鈥檇 let it. After a year I was lucky enough to go to university. That was my saviour. I learned to think for myself and, more importantly, to become responsible for my own life-choices.
I realised I鈥檇 never become who I wanted to be if I kept blaming everyone else for who I am now.
We learn something from everyone and everything that passes through our lives. Some of those lessons are painful, some frustrating but all of our experiences are priceless because if you want to learn, you鈥檒l find a way; if you don鈥檛 you鈥檒l find an excuse.
Life is 20% what happens to you and 80% how you react to what happens to you. Maybe that鈥檚 why I鈥檓 often amazed to find there are years of my life that I cannot remember yet there are some moments I can never forget.
Rumbling through some of those moments here鈥檚 how I鈥檝e changed. I鈥檝e stopped trying to please everyone; living in the past; being afraid to be different and beating myself up over mistakes I鈥檝e made. And I鈥檝e stopped presuming my generation has all the wisdom.
Most importantly, I鈥檝e stopped saving pleasures for some special occasion in the future.
Being alive today IS a special occasion.
