The Rebel World Cup: The Pride of Punjab
Nalini Sivathasan follows Panjab FA as they compete in the Conifa football tournament, described as the 'rebel World Cup' for nations and regions not represented by Fifa.
The world cup in Russia is finally here but closer to home another football tournament has been taking place - the CONIFA world cup. Also known as the 'rebel' world cup, the tournament has been staged in London this year and includes teams like Northern Cyprus, Tibet and Western Armenia. Panjab FA, which represents parts of eastern Pakistan and northern India, are one of the favourites for the trophy.
Most of its players are British-born Punjabis, who say that this competition is more than just about football. For them it's a way of connecting with their Punjabi roots and instilling pride among the millions of Punjabi-speaking diaspora in the world.
