Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

It’s been a tricky couple of weeks for my teenager, not only is the first year of her A levels studies drawing rapidly to a close but there’s pretty big things she needs to be thinking about. Mostly ‘what’s next’? The problem, as she sees it, is that she has no idea what she wants to do for a job. She’s currently doing a stint of work experience hoping that might help shed some light on the matter.

Ìý

Most of us have done a few sorts of jobs in our time. I worked in a shop selling joss sticks and tie dye, a tin can factory putting labels on peas and peaches and for one summer I worked in a sausage factory twirling Cumberlands and wrapping chipolatas in bacon. I didn’t particularly enjoy that job I have to be honest. In time I became a teacher and then a vicar, of course, but with each new job I’ve taken on it’s come with its own special set of skills and experiences and stories to tell. I’m sure you learnt plenty when you worked in the newsagents and as a kissagram, eh Chris?

Ìý

It’s a funny thing though isn’t it? Because when we meet someone new, the first question we often ask them is ‘And what do you do?’ as if the way we pay our bills is the most interesting thing about us.

Ìý

Jesus didn’t define folks by the jobs they did, in fact he was

pretty keen on people changing careers, as I recall. When he called the fisherman and tax collectors to follow him, he told them to pack in their nets, put down their pencils, become his disciples and find a new job helping him to communicate a message of love and bring wholeness and healing to as many people as possible.

Ìý

So I’m telling my Teenager not to worry, there’s plenty of time for her to decided what she wants to do to pay the bills and as for what she wants to be? Well, that’s not a difficult decision at all, my prayer is that in a world where it’s possible to be so many things, she’ll want to be kind, be generous and be happy and to make as many other people as possible happy too. That really is a job worth doing.
