Springtime is an exciting season at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as its famous rhododendrons burst into colour. From shrubs to trees, they feature throughout the garden and some more unusual diminutive species can be found within the rock garden.

Another highlight at this time of year is the snowdrop tree Halesia carolina from the US which has twigs hung with white bells resembling snowdrops. The air is also filled with a delightful scent from the balsam poplars which are just bursting into leaf.

In late spring, the lilacs put on a magnificent display and the star of the show is Syringa tomentella from western China. Its delicate, scented flowers are produced in great abundance and give a two-tone effect, their deep lilac paler on the inside and fading with age.聽聽

The alpine house is always worth a visit and includes some of the world's most unusual and delicate flowers. Take time to inspect these closely. Every plant here is a gem. Botanical treasures include plants of the primrose family and small deciduous orchids with large flowers in purple, pink or white.

If you visit on a wet day the glasshouses offer a whole range of unusual plants. The jade vine should not be missed. The glasshouses also offer a profusion of orchids and flowering Vireya rhododendrons.聽聽
