Money Box Live - Equity Release

Record numbers of older homeowners are getting cash from their property without having to sell up. How does this kind of borrowing work, and what are the pros and cons?

Record numbers of older home owners are accessing cash from the value of their property, without having to sell up. This kind of borrowing - known as equity release - has become more popular in recent years, with more than 拢3 billion lent using equity release plans in 2017. Many use the money to pay off debts, top up their pension, make home improvements or fund holidays. But how does it work and what are the pros and cons? What are the tax implications and does it prevent you downsizing? Paul Lewis and a panel of guests explore the risks, the costs and the suitability of this way to raise money from your home.

Guests:
Jane King, Independent Mortgage Adviser, Ash-Ridge Private Finance
Annie Shaw, financial agony aunt
David Burrowes, Chairman, Equity Release Council
