Adam Walton discusses the world's oldest trees with paleobotonist Dr Chris Berry of Cardiff University, who has studied ancient tree fossils, very different from the trees of today. The trees of over 300 million years ago had a very different structure to those we see around us now. The major study involved scientists from Cardiff, China and the USA, and also explores the significant amounts of carbon dioxide that ancient trees captured from the atmosphere, and the potential effects on climate.

Adam Walton is in conversation this week with a paleobotonist who has travelled the world to study the oldest trees that ever grew.
Dr Chris Berry of Cardiff University's School of Earth & Ocean Sciences, has been studying "cladoxylopsid" trees for nearly thirty years, and recent work in collaboration with Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, and State University, New York has revealed the structure of these ancient trees. Their anatomy in very different and more complex than the trees which grow today.聽
