Chris has a previously unreleased recording of Roald Dahl in conversation with his great-niece Emma. Martin Willis tells us about his great job of harbour master in Blyth.
Chris celebrates Roald Dahl day with a previously unreleased recording of the author in conversation with his great-niece Emma Pearl, which she recorded on cassette when she was 10 years old. Chris calls Emma to find out how she discovered her "most prized possession" in the back of her drawer. We hear your Top Tenuous claims to the fame of Roald Dahl. Martin Willis tells us about his great job of Harbour Master in Blyth, overseeing the boats coming and going in the port. After the windy weather, you tell us what's blown into your garden from space hoppers to greenhouses. Vassos catches up with British Dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin in the Sports Locker and Jahnavi Harrison provides the daily Pause for Thought.

Pause for Thought
Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison.
Last year, without much warning I suddenly developed a fear of flying. I used to love it, all that time to look out at the clouds and think about life, and ‘what to do!’ Even the bumps and dips - I used to find strangely comforting, like being rocked to sleep.
But last year, perhaps because of a few unfortunate events - a hair-raising landing at Luton airport in gale force winds; a close friend experiencing their plane dropping hundreds of feet without warning; and probably my overactive imagination and Chicken Licken outlook… I became quite properly scared.
I can’t say it was a phobia - I still forced myself to get on a plane last December, but it took me about 6 hours just to unclench my jaw and release the knot in my stomach.
Different things have been helping, though I wouldn’t say I’ve overcome it yet. Mantra meditation - which I’ve been doing for many years - is  - tah dah - surprisingly - really helpful! Music helps me hugely too.
But I realised the root of it is all about being completely out of control. It’s not a comfortable feeling. Whether I’m putting my life in the hands of a pilot in a nice uniform that I’ve never met to ferry me through the sky, or just trusting that each day the sun will rise - the amount of control I’ll ever have is minuscule and surrendering to the fact that I am in Krishna’s hands certainly takes the edge off.
Quite a few friends live in Florida and I’ve been relieved to see messages that although they are without electricity or running water they’re playing board games and staying dry and cheerful. I know their fear has been real and justified so it’s inspiring to hear that they are caring for each other and keeping their spirits up.
As far as I’ve understood, being out of control doesn’t mean being passive or careless, but understanding that my control lies in how I choose to respond to life’s waves and whirlpools. Letting go of fear is no easy feat - maybe the work of lifetimes. So I’m going to continue practicing 35,000 feet up, and trying to make it a daily meditation.Â
