Or have they? Gareth Gwynn's not so sure, and he's packing his own canvas pop-up and gas stove to find out where the dividing line comes between the dreams of pitching under the stars on the dunes of Gower or Barmouth and the realities of soggy nights at municipal campsites.

Over two weeks Gareth rekindles his own childhood experiences, and also those of his grandfather whose bicycle trips to camp at Llangollen in the 1930s seem the very essence of reconnecting with nature on the ultimate simple holiday.

First, the budget experience as we spend a night at a former bomb factory at Pembrey in Carmarthenshire in the company of a group of self-styled 'minimalists' from Seattle, evangelist of the 'tiny campsite' Dixe Wills, and Everest conqueror Tori James.
