Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:

We heard this week that scientist now believe a vast reservoir of water exists beneath the surface of the moon. If this proves to be true, it will transform the prospect of future lunar missions, even raising the possibility of a moon colony, someday.

I have always found the heavens fascinating. When I was about twelve I swapped my bike for a friend’s telescope; my dad wasn’t impressed, but I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait for nightfall. For hours, I lay on the tin roof of our backyard shed scanning the lunar landscape, squinting at the stars trying to spot which were planets. Sadly, my astronomical research ended abruptly when I crashed through the tin roof, bending my telescope and landing on my brother’s motorbike! He wasn’t impressed either!

The interesting thing for astronauts is that they get to look in the opposite direction – gazing at the earth from space. They often speak of planet earth in near-mystical language: as this warm living object, small and blue and beautiful, a ‘holy relic’ fragile and delicate. One astronaut commented, ‘We came all this way to explore the moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the earth…a small pearl in a thick sea of mystery.’

Most of all, astronauts are struck by the lack of borders and distinctions. From space, the earth appears as a single living organism – differences of nationality, race, sexuality, religion or politics become invisible; we are one earth community.

I wonder if the rest of us will ever get to see ourselves this way – to transcend our differences, focusing on what we have in common. I often remind myself that I am firstly a human; that differences of colour, nationality and religion are important but secondary.

It’s not easy. If I’m honest, I often struggle with the niggling differences between me and my missus, or with my friends. But it’s love and compassion that help us see beyond the petty squabbles, help us hold onto the bigger vision.

It’s exciting that there may be water on the moon, but maybe we need to recognise the vast abundance of blessings here on planet earth, learn to share them more equitably, learn to resolve our differences constructively and enjoy the adventure of life that we share.Ìý
