Episode 1
Aled Jones presents a series exploring generosity. Will an original Calendar Girl give a gift of a lifetime to a young widowed mother?
Aled Jones travels to the Yorkshire Dales to meet one of the original 'Calendar Girls'. Angela Knowles (formerly Baker) lost her husband John to blood cancer in 1998. This inspired the making of an alternative WI Calendar.
Aled takes Angela on a journey to relive the time in the late 90s where she and a group of ten middle-aged women took their clothes off to pose for a nude calendar to raise money for charity. They revisit the Dales Museum which John helped to set up and Angela has an emotional reunion with one of his former colleagues. They then travel to the village that became the setting of the blockbuster hit Calendar Girls. Remembering this incredible time of both loss and achievement is motivating Angela to help someone who is newly widowed. Aled introduces her to Katie Moore,
who tragically lost her husband Tom to leukaemia at the age of 35. She now raises their five-year-old son Archie alone.
The two women get on incredibly well, finding all sorts of similarities between their two stories. After the meeting Angela decides she'd like to help Katie, and surprises her on the West End stage of the Calendar Girls musical 'The Girls' where she is presented with a gift of a lifetime.
