Script
Good morning.
There are moments when we receive news of such importance or news that鈥檚 so shocking that we remember where we were and what we were doing at the time. The assassination of Martin Luther King was such an event for many of us.
Martin Luther King Jr. an American clergyman and civil rights leader was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on this day in 1968, at the age of 39.
His cruel and violent death made even more real the racial divisions that existed in the United States and other places. These are divisions that still exist in too many places and mean that Martin Luther King鈥檚 dream of a world where there is no racial injustice, a world where we are all understood to be of equal worth, remains to be established. As we know so well, there are those who seek to influence political and religious dialogue through the pursuit of violence. We must remain on the long road of patient peace-building which honours difference and embraces the unfamiliar.
Difficult as it may be and in spite of what we have recently experienced, we need to remember Martin Luther King鈥檚 witness to non-violent protest and to the dignity and equality of all peoples.听 And that should remain a shining example to a too often fractured and divided world.

God of peace and justice.
We thank you for the example of so many martyrs across the years
Who have given their lives as a witness to your love.
Be with us as we make small steps towards your kingdom
Of justice and peace. Amen.
