Vigils, services and other commemorative events continue this week following the terror attack in Westminster.聽聽 Across the country, people have wanted both to express their horror, and however remotely to stand alongside those who鈥檝e been bereaved.

Such public solidarity might offer some comfort, but grief itself is intensely personal.聽 However much practical help is on hand, no one can enter fully into another person鈥檚 loss, know the exact contours of their grieving, understand the depth of their pain.聽

Death and dying are part of life, yet so much about grief is unique.聽 On All Things Considered this week Roy Jenkins explores grief with three people for whom the loss remains vivid.

The Revd Julie Nicholson whose daughter died in the 7/7 London bombings of 2005.聽 She has described her journey since in her book, A Song for Jenny, which became a highly acclaimed television film.

Bishop Stephen Oliver, who was Bishop of Stepney when his wife Hilary died of cancer, after more than 40 years of marriage.聽聽 He went on to edit the book Inside Grief, in which he reflects on his own experience of bereavement.

And Nigel Lloyd Latham, a professional musician who leads worship at All Saints Church in Penarth.聽聽 His wife Angela died of cancer almost four years ago, when their daughter Naomi - Claire was six years old.
