Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From writer Abdul-Rehman Malik:

On a recent trip back to my hometown of Toronto, I noticed an intriguing聽phenomenon. In almost every hip part of town, there seemed to be a new joint on聽the block 鈥 the board game caf茅. Over coffee and cakes, I found millennials and聽grizzled Gen-Xers 鈥 kind of like me 鈥 rolling dice and moving pieces around a board.聽 There鈥檚 a no screen policy in effect. It鈥檚 one of the last places left that are fully analogue.

I鈥檝e basically given up playing board games. I find them a bit tedious and my聽patience to sit through a multiple hours of gameplay has worn thin over the years.聽 As my family often reminds me, I was once a board game fanatic and incredibly competitive. I was the sort of player who was a stickler for rules and assumed that聽everyone else was a cheat.

When I do break out the board, it鈥檚 usually for a game of chess. This pastime of sultans and emperors is still something I can get behind.聽

I鈥檝e recently been trying to teach my son how to play chess. For a six-year old, he鈥檚 a pretty patient learner. He enjoys moving as many pieces as he can to the farthest reaches of the board. He scratches his head and leans over the board, spending a long time looking at it. What are you thinking, I ask him. 鈥淪hhh Abba!鈥 he says, a bit exasperated. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e disturbing my strategy!鈥

For the mystic Rumi, chess was metaphor for the divine gift of creativity. 鈥淲e are as the flute, and the music in us is a gift from you. We are as the mountain and the gift of echo in us is from you. We are as pieces of chess engaged in victory and defeat: the possibility of victory and defeat is a gift from you.鈥澛

Invariably I let my son win. The widest smile spreads across his face when I knock over my king. The last time we played, he shook my hand and started walking away to tell his mother about his achievement. As he got to the doorway, he turned around. 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry Abba 鈥 next time I鈥檒l let you win!鈥 he said. He鈥檚 clearly figured out more than I鈥檇 like to admit.
