Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Art Historian, Dr Jim Harris:

When I was small, I didn鈥檛 like the dark. It wasn鈥檛 that I thought there聽were monsters lurking. It was a physical thing. I didn鈥檛 like the thickness of it,聽the feeling of it closing around me. I didn鈥檛 like the silence of it, the quietness聽into which my own heartbeat might come clamouring. The dark seemed to聽me unutterably lonely and I would lie there, blanketed in it, cut off and crushed聽by the weight of it.

If it was to be dark, I at least wanted sound. I had a radio from a scout聽jumble sale that I listened to with an earpiece. Frankly though, if it was to be聽dark, I wanted the landing light on.

These days, the dark means other things to me. I鈥檓 not afraid of it but it聽weighs me down differently because, now I鈥檓 older, I鈥檓 familiar with other聽sorts of darkness: grief and loss, pain, fear, worry and anger.

Now, whether or not we consider the current state of the world to be聽dark depends largely on our viewpoint, but it certainly the case that things聽look pretty murky and unknowable. There鈥檚 a fog around and wherever you聽look, it鈥檚 hard to see what might happen next.

Christians believe that God hates darkness too. But God isn鈥檛 afraid of聽it. In the Bible, the first thing God does is turn on the lights. And in a聽remarkably modern twist, they鈥檙e voice activated: 鈥淟et there be light鈥.聽

And when God made light, he saw it was good. And it is. In the light,聽we can see how beautiful we are. In the light we cannot hide our intentions.聽In the light we see we are loved. Light grows confidence and light grows trust.聽Light draws us together because we can see further.

The other thing about the light that God makes is that it shines on and聽on and on. No matter what kinds of darkness it encounters, no matter how聽bleak and cold and lonely, corrupt and dispiriting, 鈥渢he light shines in the聽darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it鈥.

So, next time it seems dark, look around. Look hard. Because聽somewhere, out there in all that murkiness, I reckon you鈥檒l see that the landing聽light is already on.
