The conversation everywhere today is understandably about the winners and losers at the Oscars. I was hoping Ruth Negga would win Best Actress for her performance in 鈥淟oving鈥�, not just because she鈥檚 Irish but because of the power of the true-life story behind 鈥淟oving鈥�.

Richard and Mildred Loving went through agonies to have their interracial marriage recognised in the United States in the 60s. Richard and Mildred had to leave their home State of Virginia and move to Washington to be married in 1958. Interracial marriage was forbidden in Virginia; five weeks after the couple returned home, police broke into their bedroom and arrested them in the middle of the night. Their crime was loving each other enough to celebrate an interracial marriage.

The judge found them guilty and ordered them to leave Virginia or go to jail. For ten years they lived in Washington and cared for their three children.

Encouraged by civil rights progress, Mildred wrote to Attorney General Robert Kennedy. He helped them find two young lawyers who took their case all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967. The judges unanimously ruled that State laws prohibiting mixed marriage were unconstitutional and the country鈥檚 last remaining Segregation Laws were wiped away.

The Loving鈥檚 life story on film could have been full of self-righteous histrionics. Instead it鈥檚 a quiet, reserved and beautiful study of how love thrives and marriage survives under unbearable pressures. Two ordinary people, madly in love, achieved something extraordinary. They really lived out the Bible鈥檚 advice 鈥榟atred causes conflict but love conquers all.鈥�

鈥淟oving鈥� deliberately concentrates on how an unjust, cruel law affects the day to day lives of innocent people 鈥� their relationships, where they could make their home, how they raised their children.

Mildred was softly spoken, shy, demure, yet incredibly strong-willed. She was never afraid to speak the truth. She reminds us that the world is changed by people of principle who make huge contributions in unassuming ways. The Loving鈥檚 survived because they had an absolute conviction about the value of doing the right thing.

They weren鈥檛 martyrs or saints, just good, decent people. The kind of people we can all be聽 - if we so decide.聽聽
