Mark Stephen visits a recycling plant to find out what happens to waste, plus Euan McIlwraith meets Alan Carter from Reforesting Scotland, who talks about low-impact living.

This week on Out of Doors we have a low impact and upcycling theme.

Mark visits a recycling plant to find out what happens to our waste once we've sorted it into various boxes and bins. What does it all get turned into and how is Scotland doing in terms of recycling?

Recycling is part of living a low impact lifestyle. Euan meets Alan Carter from Reforesting Scotland who explains that low impact doesn't necessarily mean living in a hut in the middle of the forest. We can actually live a very low impact life in towns and cities.

Using public transport is also low impact. Last week Euan brought us the news of a campaign to rebuild a railway from Banff to Elgin. This week he went along to the public meeting to find out how realistic the dream is.

Thursday 2nd February was World Wetlands Day. Mark visited the Black Devon Wetlands near Alloa with a group of school children to investigate the area and find out how important wetlands are.

Upcycling is the word of the moment. Turns out that Mark and Euan have been 'upcycling' all their lives and didn't know it. So we set them a challenge to visit antique and junk store Steptoe's Yard near St.Cyrus and buy something to be re purposed. What will they buy and what will they turn it into?

Part of the Union Canal at Linlithgow has been drained to allow for essential maintenance. Mark went for a visit to find out how Scottish Canals have carried out the work and how important canals are in this day and age.

And our low impact soundscape this week is a trip to the seaside to hear the lapping waves and sand underfoot.
