Darlene Love
Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie talk to singer Darlene Love about her music career and her work on Phil Spector's Christmas album.
Mark and Stuart have a 'Christmas Gift For You' this Boxing Day... singer Darlene Love will join them to discuss her music career and her work on the legendary Phil Spector Christmas album. In the 1960s, Darlene was one of the key vocalists of producer Phil Spector's famous 'Wall Of Sound'. She features heavily on the acclaimed festive compilation 'A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector' with solo songs including Christmas (Baby Please Come 91热爆), Winter Wonderland and Marshmallow World.
As the lead singer of The Blossoms, she has provided backing vocals to Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye and Elvis Presley, to name just a few. She also featured in the 2013 Oscar-winning documentary '20 Feet From Stardom' which explores the world of backing singers.
With her Christmas hits now a soundtrack to the holiday season and her annual Christmas performances on the David Letterman TV show, Darlene is known in the USA as the 'Queen of Christmas'.
Despite not always getting credit for her work (it is, in fact, her voice on The Crystals' hit 'He's A Rebel') Darlene - following an epiphany moment while working as a maid in Beverley Hills - has seen somewhat of a career resurgence as a solo singer in recent years.
She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, counts Bruce Springsteen among her many fans, and has appeared in all four Lethal Weapon movies!
Also on this festive RadMac show, Mark and Stuart catch up with Sheffield's leading slippers-wearer and iconic cabaret artiste John Shuttleworth, to find out what he's up to this Boxing Day. The 'Two Margarines On The Go' hitmaker also performs a special festive ditty for voice and keyboards.
They also hear from Madrid-based indie four-piece Hinds about Christmas traditions in Spain.
Plus there's a choice selection of music, merriment, festive banter AND a special seasonal Tea Time Theme Time.
