Stephen Sackur is on the road in Canada to examine if a country which sits on the world's third-largest oil reserves can deliver on its climate change commitments.
Stephen Sackur is on the road in Canada to examine if a country which sits on the world's third-largest oil reserves can deliver on its climate change commitments while continuing to pump out huge amounts of oil. The oil sands, sometimes referred to as dirty oil, have long been a target of climate change campaigners, who insist that the energy-intensive extraction of oil sands - and the greenhouse gas emissions it generates - means that most of the remaining deposits must stay in the ground. HARDtalk travels to the Cenovus Energy plant in northern Alberta to see how the thick heavy oil is extracted, and meets Alberta's environment minister Shannon Phillips in Calgary to ask her whether enough is being done to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
