Stories

'The Battle of Jutland'

We are on board the newly renovated HMS Caroline which opens to the public on 1st June 2016, in Belfast's Titanic Quarter. This is the only surviving ship from 'The Battle of Jutland'. Claire McCollum meets the ship's curator Victoria Miller, and The Venerable Ian Wheatley QHC Royal Navy, Chaplain of the Fleet in the engine room of the ship.

Mental Health

Recent studies have shown an alarming increase in mental health issues in children and young people. Diane Louise Jordan is in Huntingdon to meet Jane Hector whose 16 year-old-daughter Chantelle took her own life 4 years ago after suffering mental illness for some time. Jane takes Diane to D-Caff, a drop in centre and caf茅 which supports young people through life's struggles. It is run by the church Jane attends - the Medway Christian Fellowship and they meet in nearby community centres.

Eamonn McCrystal

Emmy award winning Eamonn McCrystal was born just up the聽road where聽his parents still live. His parents ran a nursing聽home. The elderly who lived there聽were Eamonn's first audience and he learned from them聽the powerful impact of songs and prayer.聽Many residents had dementia and didn't recognise their own family but when Eamonn sang a hymn their eyes would light up and they could remember all the lyrics. Eamonn's first audience聽had taught him the power of music. To this day all his work reflects the two constants in his life: his deeply rooted faith and聽his passion for music.聽聽

Eamonn now lives in Los Angeles. He recorded his first album at the age of 13 and now has his own on-demand television channel (EMN).

Basil Philips

Claire McCollum meets Pat Avery, and learns about his grandfather Basil Philips who saw action during 'The Battle of Jutland'. His diary reveals life on board HMS Ambuscade and as a Royal Navy Parson's Yeoman and Leading Telegraphist during the battle. Claire also meets The Venerable Ian Wheatley QHC Royal Navy, Chaplain of the Fleet who talks about the role of chaplains during the battle and on board ship in the Royal Navy.

Pat has written a book which tells the story of 'The Battle of Jutland' based on his grandfather's diary. Proceeds from the book go to The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
