Episode 2
Alex Jones and Steph McGovern are on a mission to help families change the way they shop. In this episode, they help the Garrett family from Hertfordshire.
Alex Jones and Steph McGovern are in Hertfordshire with a family who love to shop as a way of spending time together and having fun, but it's an expensive pastime and this family are hoping they can become cannier with their cash.
Rob, Jenny and their 13-year-old daughter Leah are the Garretts, and they would love to visit Disneyland. However, all three of these leisure shoppers are big spenders, meaning they can't save for the trip. Rob has two sheds packed with stuff, Jenny has nearly 50 dresses and Leah loves her trainers.
To analyse their shopping habits, Steph and Alex secretly spy on them and watch as they splash the cash, egging each other on to spend. To show them the error of their ways, Alex and Steph sneak into their house and take their possessions to stock a pop-up shop - the Garretts are shocked when they are confronted with how much they already own and what they have spent.
Alex and Steph set up their experiment, swapping their usual products for de-branded substitutes to show where they can spend less, but not all the products have been changed. Will they know the difference? Their clothes have been confiscated and they've only been given a few outfits and un-branded cleaning products, and their tablets and satellite television have been taken away.
This is a brand-loyal family and Professor Avi Shankar talks why we emotionally connect with brands. Blind testing will test their loyalty to toilet roll and iron brands - can they tell the difference? Jenny only uses ethical beauty products, but what does this actually mean? Alex goes to Neal's Yard Remedies factory to see how their products are made, and a dance group test out portable Bluetooth speakers.
It's the end of the experiment, but has this family made enough product swaps to get them to Disneyland?
