Greatest Female Voice World Cup

Steve announces the shortlist for the next edition of his musical World Cup. To mark International Women's Day, he assesses the greatest female voices across the genres.

Steve announces the shortlist for the next edition of his musical World Cup.

Last December, Roobarb took the trophy, in a competitive field of top children's TV Themes. To coincide with International Women's Day, the next edition will be looking for the greatest female voice of all time. We're looking for solo artists or frontwomen, celebrating not just how they sing, but how they express themselves.

And we're considering ALL genres: from the Queen of Jazz Ella Fitzgerald, to the blues-influenced Janis Joplin; rock star Joan Jett, to disco diva Donna Summer; the ethereal Liz Fraser, to the uncompromising Patti Smith; punk icon Siouxsie Sioux, and the continually inventive Kate Bush; 2-Tone trendsetter Pauline Black, to the godmother of grunge Kim Gordon; not to mention the perennial indie-darling PJ Harvey, and the chart-topping, world-dominating, pop star Adele.
