Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & Writer Paul Kerensa:

Never underestimate the Brits! No one can predict what unlikely concepts we鈥檒l write off then take to our hearts, from London 2012 to Scandi-Noir to the Chuckle Brothers. Step forward: the plastic bag charge. Who foresaw that 5 pence was enough to change our shopping habits, reducing plastic bag consumption 78% at our biggest supermarket? I鈥檒l spend three pounds on a coffee, yet if I forget my bag for life, I鈥檇 rather juggle my purchases, or empty a trolley upside-down into my car boot, than buy a 5p bag.

聽My wife shops with a rucksack, though she has complained it鈥檚 rather weighty. But it鈥檚 accompanied her to the supermarket ever since October, when the charge came in. Recently she discovered why the bag had been so heavy. In the first week of the bag charge, she bought a baking potato. And forgot about it. 5 months later, one caf茅 lunchtime, desperately digging deep for a toy for the kids, she found this potato, with 5 months growth 鈥 not a great toy, but a great burden, unburdened.

聽An Old Testament Psalm says: 鈥渃ast your burdens onto the Lord; he will sustain you鈥. But when Peter quotes it in the New Testament, he rewrites it: 鈥渃ast your anxieties on him, because he cares for you鈥. A problem, or potato, shared is a problem or potato halved.

聽Burdens, anxieties, or root vegetables weigh us down, falling to the bottom of our emotional rucksack. We forget they鈥檙e there, but feel their weight, till we grow used to it. The longer an anxiety stays with me, the less I think of it as a burden, the more it seems part of me鈥 but there was a me before it arrived, and there will be a lighter me after I鈥檝e unloaded it. Even with anxieties that seem unburden-able, I think it鈥檚 vital to remember they are not part of us, or our emotional rucksack. They鈥檙e potatoes we can unpack. Otherwise like my wife鈥檚 5-month spud, burdens try and take root, somewhere they don鈥檛 really belong.
