In the Christian calendar today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Lasting 40 days Lent鈥檚 a time to reflect on how I may be misusing the gift of life, and what I might do differently to be the more loving, compassionate, deeply engaged, fully alive person faith calls me to become. This year, because of something my lovely friend, Stephen, said, I鈥檓 thinking particularly about how I use language. Stephen changed career mid-life. He stopped being a lawyer and became a mediator in legal, commercial and religious conflicts. In the process he had to change his whole way of using language. As a lawyer, he says, he used words as bullets to destroy his opponent鈥檚 arguments. In court, they were weapons and his aim was to win. In becoming a mediator he had to stop using words as bullets and learn to use them to build bridges. His task is to help people in conflict find solutions acceptable to all parties. The picture of words as either bullets or bridges got me thinking. I love it when conversations help me understand better the experience of others, and I think competitions like 500 words are wonderful ways of encouraging creativity, but I鈥檝e also experienced communication on social media, for example, being used like a machine gun, spraying destructive words indiscriminately in all directions, particularly when it comes to dealing with sometimes deep differences. Time and again I read in the newspapers, see on television or experience first-hand verbal grenades being lobbed between opposing parties so they become increasingly entrenched in polarised intractable positions.

In the light of this, and conscious that traditionally Lent involves fasting, this year I鈥檓 committing to a verbal fast. I want to consciously decommission the words I use as weapons and try to speak only in ways that build up human well-being. With that in mind, perhaps now is the moment for me to stop talking!
