Chris' Pause For Thought: Kate Bottley

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:
I some times think I should get a loyalty card at the hospital car park I visit so often. The other week I found myself going to visit Maureen, a stalwart of village life for the last 7 decades, my verger, church key holder and friend. Maureen sadly knew she was 鈥榗oming in to land鈥� as she put it and would like a chance to chat.

As I walked to the lifts I heard a shout 鈥楻everend Kate鈥�, I turned to see a face I recognised, a young man whose wedding I鈥檇 officiated at just a year or two before. 鈥業t鈥檚 a girl!鈥� he shouted 鈥楥ome and meet her!鈥� I was taken in to see the lovely Lucy just an hour old and fast asleep in her glowing, but exhausted mum鈥檚 arms. 鈥榃ould you bless her?鈥� the new Daddy asked, with nothing else to hand I looked around and saw a bottle of prosecco open on the night stand, I signed little Lucy with the sign of the cross and had a quick sip myself. Then I went up to the next floor to Maureen. I sat and read her the psalms, we prayed, she told me off for turning the telly down. And I signed her with the sign of the cross just as I had little Lucy, and we said goodbye. A life well lived.

Now you might think that only one of those hospital beds was a joyful one that evening when I visited. Not so. Little Lucy鈥檚 mum and Dad were, excited to welcome the next stage of their lives and in a strange sort of way so was Maureen, as she put it 鈥業 love Jesus I should very much like to go and meet him, if that鈥檚 all the same to you鈥�.聽 At marvellous Maureen鈥檚 goodbye service I told stories of her life and in the many years ahead I look forward to seeing what lovely Lucy gets up to as she lives her life. Because that鈥檚 what really matters, not the manner of our birth or our death, how we get here or when and how we leave, but what defines us really is the bit in the middle, our life and how we make the most of the time we have.

Farewell Maureen, and welcome to the world little Lucy, I know you both have an awfully big adventure ahead.
