Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

50 years ago this year a live jazz instrumental took the pop music world by surprise by entering the top twenty. It was called Mercy, Mercy, Mercy and was performed by the wonderfully named Cannonball Adderley and his band. As the tune begins, Cannonball says to his audience 'you know sometimes we're not prepared for adversity... we don’t know exactly how to handle it...I have advice for all of us, I got it from my pianist who wrote this tune which sounds like what you're supposed to say when you have that kind of problem: Mercy Mercy Mercy.' Cannonball won a Grammy for his performance.

The tune offers a wordless cry for help that matches how people feel when they’re in distress. When someone has made a terrible mistake, when somebody close to us is really sick, words fail; and if I’m the one suffering or the one who has done wrong, sometimes I can’t focus on anything else except coping with the pain. In that condition, people are like that tune; they silently cry Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. That wordless sigh is a spontaneous reaching out to God and this week Pope Francis has explained why the cry for mercy connects us to God. His latest book is called The Name of God is Mercy and it’s full of merciful stories. For example, when he was a priest in Argentina, he met a mother who had prostituted herself in order to buy food for her children. The woman thanked the priest not only for the food a Church charity gave her but also for showing her respect because he called her ‘senora' – meaning ‘Madam.’

Pope Francis has asked the Church to celebrate 2016 as a Year of Mercy. So if I can find simple words of respect and compassion to offer the people around me, then like Canonball, I’ll be playing the tune called Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.
