Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:

I think today is a funny kind of day. It' s not quite the last day of the year. Tomorrow gets all the kudos of New Year's Eve, the day after all the freshness of a new year starting. Last week and the weekend had all the magic and sparkle of Christmas. Today is just....Wednesday the not quite end of December. Now of course I know it'll also be someone's birthday or an important anniversary somewhere. But in the general scheme of things today's a nothing kind of day. A not quite day, perfectly respectable but a didn't quite make it to glory day.

The way our minds work we tend to look back and remember the flagship moments don't we, the highlights (and sometimes the lowlights too). The poor folks in Cumbria and elsewhere will never forget Christmas 2015...

But landmark days only make up a tiny proportion of our lives, and it's how we live the ' nothing' days that really sets the tone and determines how we ourselves are remembered.

Our ordinary days might be filled with chores or childcare; perhaps they're days of hard work, or looking for work; days of waiting maybe, or missing someone terribly. I know in the past I've seen days like these as wasted time, and I've been glad when they've come to an end. But these supposedly unimportant days are still the precious days of our life, and they'll never come again. I think the real waste is when we live our every day lives in a 'not quite' kind of way. Psalm 90 says "teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."

However difficult or dull our day may be, it's still a chance to set the tone of our life. On such a day, like today, will I be caring, or brave, generous or compassionate? How I live my ordinary, and very finite, days will be how others remember me when my days are done. I hope no-one will think of me and say 'not quite'.
