Volunteer Town

Chris Stark finds out if the people of one small town be persuaded to commit one million hours to Radio 1's new volunteering initiative in just two days.

#1MillionHours is a Radio 1 and 1Xtra volunteering campaign aiming to motivate listeners across the UK to pledge one million volunteer hours over the next 12 months. Could one small town be persuaded to hit the target all by themselves? Chris Stark investigates.

To hit a million hours we would need 116 people to commit their entire year, without sleeping, a total of 8760 hours each. Ooorrrr, ever so slightly more realistic, 10,000 people to give up just a couple of hours a week, equivalent to 100 hours across the year - 1,000,000 in total.

In this show for Radio 1 & 1Xtra's Stories, Chris Stark heads to the amazing town of Corby in the East Midlands to investigate just how many people it's possible to sign up to the initiative in 48 hours. His first aim is to explore all the volunteer opportunities that exist in the town: charity shops, sports clubs, health care, environment, etc and meet the awesome people already giving their time. Then he takes to the streets, shopping centres and clubs of Corby to persuade people to pledge their time to the campaign.
