Northern Lights: Sibelius 150
On the 150th anniversary of Sibelius's birth, and as part of Radio 3's Northern Lights season, Tom Service travels to Finland in search of the real Sibelius, and the folk music and the landscapes, both rural and urban, that inspired him. There are many myths around the composer who represents Finland musically, visually and culturally. What makes his music truly Finnish and how great an influence did the folk music that he heard in Karelia exert on his own compositions? And what is Sibelius’ legacy today?
Tom speaks to the conductors Paavo Jarvi and Susanna Malkki, and visits the birthplace museum in Hameenlinna. He also speaks to Sibelius experts Vesa Siren, Viejo Murtomaki, and Daniel Grimley; renowned accordion player Maria Kalaniemi; and curator of Sibelius exhibitions at the Ateneum Art Museum, Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff.
