Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & Writer Paul Kerensa:

The trolleys at our supermarket have 2 problems: Child-seat trolleys don鈥檛 get undercover storage, so if it rains the kids get wet bottoms, and they鈥檝e just become pound-coin refundables. So up I turned, with two-year-old, towel for seat, bag for life... but no pound coin. My two-year-old turned to tantrum, really wanting that seat, when a kind woman stopped. 鈥淗ave a pound,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 Christmas.鈥 It was actually November, but I think that was the point. Generosity needn鈥檛 kick in with the Christmas lights.

I know I鈥檓 not as generous. A decade ago, collared by every cheery charity collector, I'd have direct debits going left, right and to the guinea pig rescue centre. So I rebelled, and effectively superglued my wallet shut. I became Scrooge McDuck, but without the money, or beak.

I鈥檓 somewhere in the middle now: we sponsor children in Tanzania and Bolivia, carefully plan a few standing orders... but day-to-day I lack that spontaneous generosity. I鈥檓 less Good Samaritan, more Good-At-Planning, upfront via online banking. Does that justify holding my pocket walking past a homeless person? Or staring between the lines on my book when someone needs a seat, or the price of a coffee, on a train?

Do I give enough? I checked what Jesus said about it. 鈥淪ell your possessions and give it to the poor.鈥 Ah, more than I planned on. He continues: 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry about your life, what you鈥檒l eat, or wear. Think of the birds 鈥 they don鈥檛 sow or reap, yet God feeds them.鈥

Unfortunately I can鈥檛 hear these words without thinking of Life of Brian, where they鈥檙e repeated third-hand by Brian: 鈥淭hink of the birds. Have they got jobs?鈥 The crowd mutter, 鈥淗e says the birds are scrounging. What have you got against the birds?鈥

Which I suppose reminds me of another form of generosity: giving our attention, and truly listening.

Opening advent calendar doors, maybe hearts and minds can open too, letting the world in to us, and letting a bit of us out. And if I鈥檓 open, I鈥檓 inspired by others and their kindness. So that woman at the supermarket whose little donation helped? Well it might not be Christmas, but generosity can snowball and snowball and snowball.
