Pause For Thought
From Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue, Elstree:
I once organised a light-hearted game for my fellow rabbis, asking each of them to present a biblical book in a few seconds. The one who got Leviticus wrapped himself in a sheet, pretending to be a priest and sternly said 'no no no no no' while wagging a finger.
But Leviticus is more than a list of do’s and don’ts. In the midst of all the three thousand year old rules and regulations, there’s a chapter with some very different instructions. There are laws about treating the disabled with respect, not keeping a worker’s wages overnight and loving your neighbour as you love yourself.
And there’s a law stating that when you harvest your field you should not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or pick up the fallen grain but leave some for the poor and needy in your society.
This is a remarkable piece of social legislation. Elsewhere in the bible, in the book of Deuteronomy there are two seemingly contradictory verses in the same chapter. One verse says ‘there need be no poor among you,’ but just seven verses later we’re told ‘there will always be poor people in your land.’
What this means, I think, is that we have the potential to ensure that there are no poor among us, but we do not always do everything we can to achieve that goal. The lawmakers of Leviticus knew that if landowners left some of their produce for the poor, society’s wealth could be equally distributed.
I think those biblical priests and lawmakers understood something about poverty and human nature: hardwired into each of us is a desire to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Sometimes, though, we need to be reminded of it. Whether it comes from finger-wagging priests or Chris inviting us to bid for a dinner and disco, it’s an important element of our humanity.
