Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

Half term for many of us and our kids means trips to museums and art galleries. At the end of an outing we always like to stop at the gift shop for a treat and to spend some of our pocket money. We have a rule though in our family whether you’re a kid or a grown-up we all get the same amount to spend and no one can tell you what to spend it on but once it’s gone, it’s gone.

A couple of summers ago, in Florida we applied the rule. My daughter and I are so similar we went into the first shop we found and flashed our cash, but my son is more considered, he took his time and eventually after a few days decided on a small, plastic alligator, he called it Geof. Geof was a make it yourself alligator, you had to put your money in the machine, turn the handle and watch the toy being made before your very eyes. Geof went everywhere that holiday and eventually made it home safe to my son’s bedroom.

But disaster struck, one afternoon my little boy left his bedroom door open and Buster, our dog, got in, found Geof and chewed him to pieces. My son was distraught, with the dog banished to the corner I set about in vain searching online sites to find a replacement. No luck. Through desperation I emailed the theme park where we’d bought Geof to see if they could help.

3 weeks later a package arrived addressed to my boy. Inside was a plastic alligator and a note ‘Hi, my name is Steve, I am Geof’s cousin, please keep me away from dogs.’ My son was thrilled and I sobbed.

The phrase ‘Going the extra mile’ is taken from Jesus’ words to his disciples about how they should live, he says ‘If someone asks you to walk one mile walk two’ . For us today it’s come to mean doing that little something extra that you don’t have to do but want to do. Kindness is an underestimated superpower. Kindness can transform the saddest of situations into joyful reminders of the brilliance of our fellow humans. It can make small children and grown-ups smile and restore our faith in humanity. Steve now sits proudly on my son’s bookshelf a reminder to be a little kinder and to go the extra mile, he’s also well out of the reach of Buster.
