Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:

Years ago a fellow clown taught me to fire-eat. I was in need of a party-piece. Not long after I’d learnt, a Rabbi friend, Gloria, invited me to fire-eat a blessing at her son’s wedding in New Jersey. She met me from the plane and took me to her home where a welcome cup of tea was waiting. Once I’d drunk it, I went to wash up my mug, but Gloria leapt between me and the sink. I was about to break kosher requirements by putting my milky tea-stained cup into a sink reserved for meat-related items. For Gloria’s family mixing dairy and meat is a no-no. It was one of many unintentional mistakes I made as I got to know friends and colleagues from other faiths. I grew up in a small market town where the only people of faith were Christians and we didn’t learn about any religion other than Christianity at school. Today I live and work among men and women of many different faiths, and my kids are much more informed about other religions than I was as a teenager. The intervening years have been a rich and sometimes unsettling journey of discovery for me. Experience has taught me the dividing lines don’t run between religions, but across them: There are people of other faiths and no faith with whom I feel a real kinship, and folk within my own tradition whose beliefs leave me cold. Friends of other faiths have helped me go deeper into my own tradition because they’ve asked the kind of searching questions fellow Christians wouldn’t think to ask me. They’ve highlighted my ignorance of my own faith, and challenged my prejudice about theirs. I like to think I’ve done the same in return. That’s only been possible because we’ve built caring relationships rooted in the common humanity and values we find we share. These have created the safe space to explore contentious and potentially divisive questions in an honest way. We’ve also had a lot of laughs – like the day I accidentally burnt my eyebrows and fringe preparing to fire-eat a blessing at a Jewish wedding.
