Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

In my job I’ve become a bit of a buffet connoisseur. After a christening, wedding or funeral, if I’m asked, I’ll pop along to where the ‘do’ is and share in a plateful of nibbles. Buffets vary in quality and variety, a bad buffet is almost all entirely beige with only a sprinkle of a cress garnish to provide any colour at all, a buffet at the top of its game has a wide variety, is not exclusively pastry based and perhaps even has some carrot batons. I’ve noticed though over the years the food at these occasions has changed. Amongst the usual sandwiches, cheese on sticks and sausage rolls, there’s also bhajjis, spring rolls and your favourite Chris, hummus.

At William’s christening the other Sunday – (a particularly wriggly toddler), as we gathered at the font I did warn those stood close up that they could be well within the splash zone – as I’m prone to getting a little over enthusiastic. Cameras came out, William got wet and we welcomed him into the Christian faith. After we gathered for pictures including William’s Dad’s work friends, amongst them was a man who had clearly chosen to wear his best bright blue turban for the occasion. I got a chance to talk to him over the buffet later, and we talked about the service a bit, and about his Sikh faith and mine and now William’s Christian faith, but we mostly talked about the places we were from and our interests and passions.  Through mouthfuls of chicken tikka pizza we discovered a mutual friend and a shared love of 90’s hip hop.

Some might worry for William growing up in a multi faith nation, worried he might get confused about what he, as a Christian, is supposed to believe and about where he belongs. I’m not worried at all, I’m excited. I think that there is much each faith and culture can learn from the other, eating and laughing together, telling stories, listening and discovering common passions. A faith does not lose its distinctiveness by sharing with others neither does one person by talking to another. A buffet of one sort lacks variety, there is so much more to taste, and there’s plenty of room for everyone at the table.
