Grammar schools - are they good for society?

Are they a force for social mobility.... allowing bright children from any backgrounds into a strong academic environment? Or do they end up an enclave of those who can buy into the catchment area and pay for tutors to pass the entrance exam?

Did you go to a Grammar school? What did it do for you? Do your children go to one? Have you done what it takes to get in - move house, tutoring....Maybe you'd never touch one in a million years...
