Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has demanded an independent inquiry into the air strikes that hit its hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz. At least 22 people, including MSF staff, were killed in attacks the charity blames on US-led Nato forces.

Turkey's President Recep Tayipp Erdogan is in Brussels today for high level talks on migration. Turkey is home to at least 2 million Syrian refugees, and it is the main departure point to Europe for those making their way across the Mediterranean. The UN says 5,000 people have been crossing over to Greece every day in recent weeks.

The Conservatives have brought their conference on to traditional Labour territory, Manchester, this year. Manchester has just one of its ten metropolitan boroughs under Tory control. It is however at the heart of the Chancellor's much heralded devolution agenda which is seeing mostly Labour controlled councils in the north of England being given new powers.

Sean Anstee is the leader of Trafford council, the sole Conservative council leader among those 10 boroughs.

An excavation will begin today to dig up a Spitfire from the field where it has lain for 75 years since it crashed during the Second World War. Archaeologists hope to recover surviving parts of the plane from the Cambridgeshire peat before the agricultural landscape is restored to wetlands as part of a major conservation project.

Large shops in England will start charge 5p for each plastic bag as of today. The rest of the UK has already introduced charges to discourage shoppers using plastic bags. Smaller retailers that have under 250 employers are exempt from the English rules and retail trade representatives worry that consumers will be confused. Ìý

How did mammals survive the massive asteroid that struck the earth 66 million years ago, whilst dinosaurs were wiped out? A recently discovered fossil of a previously unknown species of mammal could give us some clues. The beaver-like creature lived within a few hundred thousand years of the asteroid impact, and has surprised scientists in its size and level of specialisation.Ìý ÌýÌý

David Cameron told the Andrew Marr show yesterday that the government would be publishing a new GP contract "focussing on making sure people can get access to a GP on a 7 day basis: 8am and 8pm". He said that thanks to the changes his government had made a third of GPs offer this now, but that "we want it for everybody".
