Chris' Pause For Thought: Richard Coles
From Rev鈥檇 Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:
A week of high drama: perorations at Tory Conference, congratulations at the Bake Off final, denunciations and to be stood in the street shouting at Steve Coogan as he drove past in his Lotus - all of these fade into utter inconsequentiality, because of contractions at Finedon Vicarage, where I live. 聽Two of our sausage dogs, Audrey and H, after a whirlwind romance (of about thirty seconds) contrived to produce three puppies, three chipolatas, which arrived on Wednesday afternoon, ironically, just as I was dedicating a new banner for Mothers鈥 Union.
Francis, Benedict and Hilda, named after the founders of two religious orders and the toughest nun in the history of the English church, popped out in time for tea. Twitter tottered, Facebook froze, as puppy pictures poured forth in a cataract of squee.
I鈥檓 not one really for puppies and kittens on social media, or so I thought but now I鈥檓 as wearying as any doting dad, or granddad.
Well not really 鈥 puppies aren鈥檛 babies 鈥 they鈥檙e much more expensive to start with 鈥 and I strongly resist the impulse to dress them up as little people and rewrite my will in their favour.
But as I stood watching them latched on to Audrey鈥檚 multiple busts, it occurred to me that this is probably as near as I'll get to parenthood. Civilly partnered, targeted by Saga, while not impossible, it鈥檚 hardly likely, and it鈥檚 never been part of my plan.
And then I was surprised by a thought not thought before: that these puppies, an hour into life, were already inevitable. That the dividing cells, and double helixes and enzymes and zygotes, whatever they are, that happened so they happened were united from the very beginning in the triple purpose of making them.
鈥淚t was you who formed my inward parts,鈥 said the writer of Psalm 139, 鈥測ou knit me together in my mother鈥檚 womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works鈥.
Wonderful indeed that out of cosmic chaos these things happened so that these three happened, to keep me awake all night and delight my heart.
