Chris' Pause For Thought: Ann Easter

Chris' Pause For Thought: Ann Easter

From Canon Ann Easter, Chaplain to the Queen:

Last week I got a new electric toothbrush – see, my pearly whites! – and when I got home, I went online to extend its warranty; I filled in all the details of where and when I got the brush but then I was asked for my date of birth! What?? How could that have any bearing at all on my use of an electric toothbrush? And the programme refused to complete without it, so no warranty.

I will not be defined by the number of years I’ve been on this planet no – me and the other Baby Boomers have seen that one off! And, at a stage of life where our grandparents were donning black bombazine and finding comfort in pipe and slippers, we’re embracing the next stage of our lives, open to new challenges, constantly curious about the world. My sister-in-law has spent the past nine years training to be a psychotherapist and now she will enter her Third Age with that to add to the wit and the wisdom she’s already accumulated to help and support the many people who need it.

Freed from some of the worries of the past – you know, I don’t care if my bum looks big in this - we can discover new passions and give them a whirl without worrying too much about the possibility of failing. So I’m glad that, on this, the International Day of Older People, the theme is ‘A New Power for Development’ as we rightly celebrate the contribution made by those of riper years.

Traditionally, God has been portrayed as an old man – in the days when being old meant being respected big time; nowadays, certainly in the Western world, we seem to venerate youth. But I believe God’s beyond age and so understands and values each and every one of us, whatever stage of life we’re at.

But God’s good like that.

A day like today reminds us that everyone has something special to bring to the party of this life and must be included, no-one left behind – unless, that is, they’re busy finding new uses for electric toothbrushes.
