Chris' Pause For Thought: Brian D'Arcy

Chris' Pause For Thought: Brian D'Arcy

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I鈥檓 at the point in life where I鈥檝e actually lived through the events about which history programmes are made. For example, I remember well the July day in 1969 when man first walked on the moon. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong left these words on the surface-: 鈥淗ere men from Planet Earth first set foot on the moon鈥 We came in peace for all mankind.鈥

What stayed in my memory though were the fantastic pictures of earth from space we saw after that, and the awesome moon last night showcased the beauty of creation once again.

Recently, another astronaut, Mike Good, who flew two missions on the shuttle Atlantis, recalled his experience of 鈥渨alking in space鈥. He said he came to regard Earth as 鈥渙ur spaceship鈥.聽 He remembers they could look down on the Earth and admire it. He wrote, 鈥淲e鈥檙e all on this spaceship together, flying through space. We need to take care of our ship, and once you鈥檝e seen the planet from space, it鈥檚 hard to look at it in the same way again.鈥

Alas most of us will never see our good earth from 300 miles above. But we can learn to see our world and one another with different eyes. We can learn to respect our environment and our fellow travellers because God, who created all, 鈥渕akes his sun to rise on the bad and the good and causes rain to fall on the just and unjust alike.鈥 (Matthew 5:45)

Remarkably Pope Francis used those very words yesterday in Philadelphia and he is passionate about the need to change our ways if we are to save the earth. In Cuba and America last week he once again highlighted the sorry state of our beautiful world.聽

鈥淭he Earth, our home,鈥 he once wrote, 鈥渋s beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth鈥 We鈥檙e not God. The Earth was here before us and was gifted to us.鈥

Sooner rather than later then, we鈥檝e got to learn that the Earth doesn鈥檛 belong to us, rather we borrow it from our children.
