Chris, growing up I often felt that our home was a halfway house for the broken-hearted. From time to time, my mother would announce a shift in sleeping arrangements as a room was prepared to welcome someone we hardly knew into our lives.

In a city of immigrants like Toronto, many people fell through the cracks. Finding your feet in a new metropolis is never easy. Some would end up coming to the mosque. Now, ours was a new community and there wasn鈥檛 much in terms of social services 鈥� no soup kitchens or emergency hostels 鈥� so my parents and others offered friendship, a meal at home, and when they could and sometimes they did,聽 a bed 鈥� for a few days and in some cases even a few weeks.聽

I particularly remember Afifa from Turkey who was so traumatised that she needed to be coaxed out of her room on a daily basis to have her meals with us. I don鈥檛 think we ever found out her past, but my father eventually got her a ticket back to her family.

In the lamenting sound of the reed flute, the mystic Rumi heard a story of separation. "Since I was cut from the reedbed,鈥� he heard the flute sing, 鈥淚 have made this crying sound. Anyone pulled from its source longs to go back.鈥�

We came from the presence of God. We are all exiles from our true home. Life, I鈥檇 like to believe, is a journey back to that place.

One thing鈥檚 for sure though, the journey won鈥檛 be easy. There鈥檒l be moments of joy and celebration. There will also be trials and tribulation. We鈥檒l experience something of pain and loss. Our spirits will splinter and our bodies will ache.

Sometimes the distress will be too much. We may have to abandon the places of our birth, the streets that we once played in and the houses where our children were born.

At some point we will all seek refuge. Some of us will find it in a loved one鈥檚 arms. Others will find it in a dry place to sleep and a hot meal.

This week several friends left Britain on aid convoys destined for Germany and Hungary laden with donations from thousands of strangers - people who understand that, whatever crisis brought them there, sometimes the only hope for the distressed is a stranger鈥檚 gift. My prayers for what its worth are with them. Blessed be the strangers.
