Chris' Pause For Thought: Sharon Grenham-Thompson

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:

When I was a little girl I was deeply impressed to be told that I knew someone who¹d been alive in the reign of Queen Victoria: my great grandmother who was born in 1893. For me she was a fascinating living link to a time I only heard about in history lessons.  Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch in British history, but later this afternoon Queen

Elizabeth 11 will break that record - reigning 63 years, 7 months and 3 days.

One of the striking similarities between the two royal ladies is how they both presided over times of great change for the nation – for Queen Victoria the Industrial Revolution; for Queen Elizabeth – the space and internet age.

But there are differences too, and we can see one pretty significant one as the 91Èȱ¬ hosts its ‘India Season.’ In the Victorian era, the Queen was known as ‘Empress of India,’ amongst other titles, and the influence of Great Britain extended across the globe. Today there is no Empire, most former colonies having established their independence, like India in 1948.

But Queen Elizabeth is still a hugely popular figure. I think that has a lot to do with the wide respect her long years of service have earned. Because however much we might consider her life privileged and protected, she was not, as a young girl, expecting to be Queen, and the years have still thrown up plenty of challenges for her. It can’t be easy, having to be a role model, symbol, focus of unity and all those other things we expect from her.

One of the things that has sustained and inspired Her Majesty is her strong Christian faith. She doesn’t make a song and dance about it, but she is a regular churchgoer, and sometimes alludes to the message at the heart of her faith in public speeches. In 2012 she said ‘Faith plays a key role in the identity of millions of people, providing not only a system of belief but also a sense of belonging. It can act as a spur for social action. Indeed, religious groups have a proud track record of helping those in the greatest need.’

Whether large and international, or small and unseen, acts of service by people of all faiths and none build a better life for us all. The Queen has served her country as monarch for 63 years. I hope that each one of us gets, and takes, the chance to be of service to someone today.

Prince William has written this about his grandmother - "Time and again, quietly and modestly, the queen has shown us all that we can confidently embrace the future without compromising the things that are important."
