Pause For Thought
Last Sunday I spent the entire day moving house. I have to admit that I was feeling a little bit sorry for myself – for reasons that aren’t worth going into that was the fourth time I’ve moved in less than two years – and it’s not over yet.
It was a very hot day and there weren’t many people around on my street. In fact most of the neighbours were in their homes and, at one point, as I was transferring the umpteenth box into my car, I noticed that, presumably because of the heat, all the blinds of their windows were drawn.
I had a strange sense that something sinister was happening. I imagined that this might have been what it felt like for so many Jewish people in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia three quarters of a century ago. The Nazi government introduced anti-Jewish legislation that meant many had to leave homes on streets they had shared for years with non-Jewish neighbours. And as they left, they could see people with whom they had once been friends watching from behind their closed curtains, doing nothing to prevent them from being forced to leave.
Of course that’s not what was going on in my leafy suburb of North-West London a couple of days ago. But I suddenly sensed how difficult it must have been for my ancestors to be obliged to leave places they had regarded as their homes, not just from Nazi Germany but in so many other places as well.
And of course that experience isn’t limited to the Jews. Countless people in all lands and ages have encountered war or cruelty and have been obliged or ordered to flee. In current news we hear of people who, for a variety of reasons, have either chosen or been forced to leave their homes.
Although, it is claimed that some migrants’ motives may be less than noble - many have a story of hardship and loss.Ìý And that story often begins with someone closing their curtains, turning a blind eye to a set of circumstances that force someone to abandon their home. Behind the eyes of such lonely, fearful travellers is an experience of hardship and loss and a yearning for human kindness that, all-too-often, is kept behind closed curtains by prejudice and fear.
