Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I got back to London yesterday after a short break in the town where I was born and grew up 鈥 a little place called Burry Port that鈥檚 lapped by the gentle waves of Carmarthen Bay. It鈥檚 over fifty years since I first left home to study in Cardiff and I shall never forget that first journey into the wider world. I鈥檇 never been away 鈥 no holidays, no sleepovers, nothing 鈥 and I was filled to the brim with emotion as I said goodbye to my mother. You鈥檇 have thought I was going to Pluto rather than Cardiff and that sense of nostalgia has never left me.

That was roughly when I first heard a song that became my personal anthem in the years that followed. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 my home,鈥 it was called; it had been made famous by Louis Armstrong who鈥檇 made no fewer than four recordings of it. But the interpretation that got my goose-pimples rising was done by Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. 鈥淲here the sun sets in the sky, and flowers never die, and friends don鈥檛 pass you by 鈥 that鈥檚 my home.鈥

91热爆 is where our stories begin 鈥 not always bright and beautiful but the place where the narrative that shapes our lives was set in motion. 91热爆 remains a reference point, it gives us our moral compass, it pins us to fundamental truths about ourselves and remains hauntingly within us whatever happens subsequently. 鈥淟isten to me, all who follow after the right, who seek the Lord: consider the rock from which you were hewn; remember your father and your mother who gave you birth.鈥 Thus spake the prophet of old.

Life goes on of course. Stuff happens. But there鈥檚 one thing I鈥檝e never doubted. 鈥淚鈥檓 always welcome back no matter where I roam; it鈥檚 just a little shack but to me it鈥檚 home sweet home.鈥澛
