Pause For Thought

Summer sports are having a field day: World Cup Women鈥檚 football and tennis at Wimbledon have been thrilling the crowds. This week the Ashes begin. If I鈥檓 honest, I鈥檇 much rather being doing sport than watching it. I swim and cycle regularly and now, of course, I鈥檓 out running every other day in preparation for the Windsor Half Marathon. That said, running isn鈥檛 something I enjoy particularly so the only way is to throw myself into it and be utterly committed to staying the course. I鈥檝e been listening to Nelson Mandela鈥檚 autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, as I jog my 鈥榮hort runs to fitness鈥 around Richmond Park and along the river. At the very least his words stop me from whinging as my knees crack and my hips creak! Instead of despairing at the slow progress I鈥檓 making, I stagger defiantly onwards. I may get exhausted but emotionally I鈥檓 uplifted by the combination of his experience and my exercise. I find the same is true when I鈥檓 doing work I love: It may be mentally challenging but it鈥檚 emotionally energising. All this leads me to recognise truth in the words of English poet, David Whyte, when he wrote, 鈥楾he antidote to exhaustion is not rest, but wholeheartedness.鈥 Many of us settle for tired lives because we have no empowering sense of purpose. We go through the motions of existence instead of living fully the emotions of engagement with new ways of seeing and being. At its best faith is about recognising the potential in the here and now to be what we can鈥檛 yet picture and for us to live lives that at present we think impossible. Time and again I meet people who, against the odds, make something magnificent out of the messy hand they鈥檝e been dealt. Like Nelson Mandela they know, as he once said, 鈥淭here is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.鈥
